Hi folks,

I was wondering if you could assist in providing some steps to take to check for VMWare Netbackup performance issues. We are on 10Gig infrastructure and using ESXi 5.5. Our Netbackup environment is Netbackup 7.6.2 on a 2012 Media servers with a 2008 Master server.

On our VM backups we are getting poor backup speeds. Can you please assist me in identifying what to look at? I read that the VM kernel has a limitation but we not even getting close to it.

Thanks in Advance

How many VM's do you backup concurrently.

What storage media are you writing too?

What is the performance you are experiencing? Check your VMware host
information in your policy. Check your communication between ESX and media
server and master server.

Treat the VM as a physical host, install client and back it up that way and
see what you get.

Where NBU performance flourishes is when multiple snapshots are running
concurrently in combination with NBU Accelerator.

Hello

First thing I would do was to measure disk read speed and network throughput outside netbackup to know what speed to expect.

There has been a limitation at about 220 MB/s on vadp in the vmware kernel earlier in 5.0, don't know if 5.5 has something similar

One thing I seen have speed VMWARE backup greatly, is increasing the raw buffer size to the recomended size (1 MB back in 5.0)

Changing number and size of buffers on the media servers can also improve the speed, if it is not near the lowest of the ones measured outside netbackup

Regards
Michael

Michael has some good points, but unless I've missed it, we know next to
nothing about your site and method of backup.

Stabs in the dark:

Is the i/o path from vm to esx very short?

Have you tuned the NBU master/media servers?

Is your backup path independent of the network/normal i/o and disk i/o?

There are hundreds of other possibilities depending on your setup.

Cheers, Wayne
